What are Coronaviruses?

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals, mammals, birds or humans. In humans, these coronaviruses cause respiratory tract infections that can be mild such as some cases of the common cold, and other may be severe such as SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and now COVID-19. These symptoms in other species vary like for example, in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea. The most recently discovered coronavirus causes coronavirus disease COVID-19.

COVID-19?

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

The name coronavirus is derived from the Latin corona, meaning “crown” or “halo”, which refers to the characteristic appearance reminiscent (reminding) of a crown or a solar corona around the virions (virus particles) when viewed under two-dimensional transmission electron microscopy, due to the surface being covered in club-shaped protein spikes.

COVID-19

What is a virus?

A virus is a small parasite (the parasite, lives off of another organism, the host, harming it and possibly causing death) that cannot reproduce by itself. Once it infects a susceptible cell, however, a virus can direct the cell machinery to produce more viruses. Most viruses have either RNA or DNA as their genetic material.

So, these coronaviruses were discovered way back in the 1960s. The earlier one’s discovered was an infectious bronchitis virus in chickens and two in human patients with the common cold as the cause. Other members of these families were identified, out of which one in 2002–2003 epidemic i.e. the SARs-CoV. Most of these have involved serious respiratory tract infections.

How does this COVID-19 spread?

People can catch COVID-19 from others who are infected with the virus. The disease can spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose, mouth when the person infected with COVID-19 exhales or coughs. These droplets lands on the objects and surfaces around the person. Other surrounding people catch this virus by then touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth which leads to the entry of the virus inside the body of the human. People can also catch COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person with COVID-19 who coughs out or exhales droplets. Hence it very important to stay more than 1m away from the person who is sick.

Once this virus enters the human body, they start to replicate and then release inside the human body, multiplying themselves inside.

Studies till now say that this virus transmits through contacts and not through the air.

Symptoms of COVID-19:

Common

· Fever

· Tiredness

· Dry Cough

Some may also experience:

· Aches and pains

· Nasal congestion

· Runny nose

· Sore throat

· Diarrhea

In starting mild symptoms can be observed and the confirmation of the virus may be detected between 2–14 days.

How this virus started?

Usually, this virus infects the animals mostly the bats, snakes, and other animals. But studies say that this virus has transmitted to humans through infected animals which were in exposure with humans. Few reports suggest that it was transmitted through bats and few that it was transmitted to a bat then to pangolin and then to a human.

But now the important thing is about how to get this pandemic in control, as no vaccine yet is known. Some good news, that the first microscopic image has been found out in India, also Oxford University has developed one vaccine for COVID-19 which is open for clinical trials on humans, also other many researches are taking place to prevent this deadly pandemic disease.

Which countries are affected?

All over the globe, from almost around 247 (countries + islands), almost around 200 of them are affected by COVID-19.

Now let’s have a look at

Coronavirus pandemic in China:

The number of cases started to increase in China everyday. Almost 2000 new cases were reported everyday in mainland China. These trend was stopped on 18th Feb, when it was recorded less than 1000 new cases. On 5th march it was 99 new cases that were reported. The death toll also increased, and till date (28 March 2020) it is 3295. The recovered cases had a great increase day by day, after 20 Feb. Till date 74971 people have been recovered in China.

Coronavirus pandemic in Italy:

First case in Italy was reported on 31st Jan, but the increase in number of cases was seen from 21st Feb. As the days pass on the number started to increase. On 28th March 2020, Italy had overcome China in total number of cases reporting almost 86000. Also Italy is the country with maximum number of deaths due to COVID-19. It can be seen that the numbers are increasing day by day and the situation is almost out of control as the health systems are overflow.

Coronavirus pandemic in USA:

First case in USA was reported on 26 Jan. But in the month of February there were no much cases that were reported, as in March suddenly in the first week, number of new cases started to increase. Everyday it increased, and on 27 March it over took China and on 28th March it crossed the mark of 1 lakh cases reported. USA now has the maximum number of the cases reported in world. New York has the maximum number of cases reported in USA alone having approx 46000 (28 March).

Coronavirus pandemic in India:

First case in India was reported in Kerala on 30th Jan, when a person from Wuhan arrived. In the month of February, only 2 cases were reported. In first week of March spike in reported cases was observed and the number of cases began to increase. After 15th March, number increased everyday. Due to this events, major steps were taken to keep this in control, as India ranks the second position in population. So complete lockdown was imposed on 25th March for 21 days. The maximum number of cases reported in single day is 140 on 27th March. Currently in the state of Maharashtra, maximum number of cases are reported around 180 and Kerala the second state with maximum number of cases. Around 79 people have been recovered and 20 people died in India due to COVID-19. It took 12 days to reach from 100 cases to 1000 cases, and in 5 days it adds more new 1000 cases which leads to total of 2000 cases in India. Around in 3 days more 1000 cases in India which gives a total of 3000 cases. After that it took only 2 days for more 1000 cases and the increase in cases continued 4000+ cases. In 2 days more 1000 cases were added taking total cases in India to 5000+, Maharashtra being affected with most number of cases in the country with 1000+ cases. 2 days for more 1000 cases total 6000+ cases with 200+ deaths till 10th April. One day to become 7000 cases in India.

So what these takes to us. Europe can be seen currently the epicenter. As countries like Italy, Germany, France, United Kingdom and others are badly affected. Death toll has been increasing day by day, new cases are reported day by day. Which has challenged the health systems of every country.

Comparison of China, Italy and USA new cases.

Also United States is now becoming the hot spot, as it reports 1 lakh+ cases till date. If the trend of the new cases here too is observed, it is increasing exponentially. Other countries like Iran, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and many others are badly affected.

India being second in population, if it gets affected in such a manner then we cannot even imagine what scenario it would. Hence major steps have been imposed here. 21 days of complete lockdown has been imposed.

The above reported number of cases are all over the world. We can see how initially, it started, and then started to increase. It almost took around 2 months to become 1 lakh cases and then 15 days for 2 lakh and then a week for 3 lakh and 3 days for 4 lakh and 2 days for 5 lakh and 2 days for 6 lakh and just a day for 7 lakh and 2 days for 8 lakh and 1 day for 9 lakh.

This kind of growth can been seen, and if precautions are not taken then this might continue to grow. Its just like butterfly effect, chaos theory in branch of mathematics . It shows that a very small change can lead to much bigger changes. Similar here the micro-organism has lead the whole world in panic. The global economic can been seen in danger. It’s true that it can be a global recession, as each and every country is now fighting against this virus, making all their efforts to protect their country and their people.

Can it be stopped?

I believe it can be stopped. But very serious and major steps with determination are must to stop the pandemic. We have an example of China, how they had to shut down all their activities, in the month of Feb and now we can see they are reviving. Almost China is healing back and soon they are going to start all the services.

So why can’t we do?

The scientists and doctors are working day and night. The doctors working hard for the infected people, also with the scientists they are experimenting to get the vaccines ready. Many trials have been done and soon we can get the results.

Also all the governments are working hard, imposing different rules and taking steps to fight this challenge. Recently as the lockdown is the step to stop the transmission, many countries have imposed the lockdown. As for the government it is the challenge the health systems are facing, to make it as strong as they can.

What we people can do?

As the case was reported in Wuhan, China, now the virus has been spread all across the world affecting almost all the countries. As stated this virus spread due to transmission by contact or touch, or inhale of the infected droplets of cough or sneeze of infected person, one must avoid the contacts/touch this day. Hence governments are imposing lockdown across countries to stop the transmission. Stage 3 is when community transmission takes place and this is the most vulnerable and dangerous stage when most of the people can be affected. Hence lockdown has been imposed.

It is not only a fight for the government, doctors, scientists, armed forces but for all the people of a country. It’s like a war, where we have to fight for the humanity. They have to strictly follow the rules and have to maintain social distancing. By doing these, keep ourselves in our homes and isolated for few days and taking each and every step and precautions, we can easily overcome these.

Precautions:

  1. Keep washing hands with soap frequently and regularly (use of hand sanitizer can be helpful too).
  2. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  3. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  4. Stay home, stay safe.
  5. Proper personal hygiene must be followed.
  6. Keep ourselves up-to-date with the accurate news.
  7. Make others aware, tell others about same and try not to spread fake news and stop the same.
  8. Follow the guidelines issued by the government and WHO.
  9. No need to panic.

Hope these can be helpful, and can aware many. No need to panic or fear, but the stats shown above are only to make us all aware about the situation and to tell that this can be overcome. Suggestions and your views are always accepted.
